Soap No. 11 – Mantra Marbles: Botched!

What do I mean by botched? Definition: to carry out (a task) badly or carelessly.

This is my first month participating in the Soap Challenge Club and I love it! As a new soap maker (this is my 11th batch to date) I appreciate the tutorials, the community, and the great techniques. Despite the thorough instruction, I still managed to botch this batch. Amy (of Great Cakes Soapworks) advised a slow tracing recipe and specifically said NOT to use SPICY essential oils. I thought it strange that someone would use jalapeno or habanero in soap. The brand new CLOVE essential oil I added to the non-swirled portion seemed like a great idea… until 5 seconds later. Rookie.

For those experienced, please enjoy this laugh on me.  For those just starting out-

Lesson learned:  Clove is a SPICE and the essential oil accelerates trace!

Other Soap Notes:

  • Soap weight before cure – 1.9lbs (889g)
  • Colorant – 50% of the olive oil was infused with Turmeric (it’s a muted yellow, not bright like I was hoping for). I used the infused oil in the whole batch, then divided the batch and added brick red iron oxide to one part and titanium dioxide to the other.
  • Scent – 3g Ylang Ylang EO, 2g Lavender EO, 1g Clove EO. Only added to center portion of batch.  Smells warm and cozy to me but the clove dominates. I would reduce it next time.

Thanks for reading!
